I know I'm a real late bloomer on this one, but in between breaks at the studio, I've been obsessed with the show "Rescue Me." It was my buddy Michael who suggested it to me 2 years ago. I didn't listen to him. Well, now I have and I can't stop. It's like a drug. My Netflix instant plays have never been used so frequently and I'm flying through these "Rescue Me" seasons like nothing.

Also, I think I got a couple songs out of it...nothing like burning buildings, high drama, and some sadness to provoke new music.

New record is nearly finished.

Hey Guys....It's been far too long since the last post. My apologies. I've been traveling a bit now that the new record is finished. I'm writing from Israel at the moment. I had to hop on a plane and sort of clear my head and gain some new perspective. It's been an amazing trip here with a ton of stops along the way and a couple risky days with rocket attacks down in Southern Israel (a world I am not used to in Brooklyn). I've seen it all here. When I get back to NY, I'll be finishing the new album artwork.

Brooklyn Heights

I grabbed a coffee and croissant this morning and walked down to the Brooklyn Heights promenade. I do this pretty often. The view of the City is pretty spectacular and it always reminds me about the control and freedom of my days. Seeing the skyline is both amazing, gorgeous, intimidating, and comforting. But, it also is relieving to me that I am able to view this skyline while also not being trapped within it doing something that doesn't make me happy. Music does not always give me happy days nor is writer's block a comfortable thing to experience, but at the end of the day I know that it's all on me and it's all up to me. Having choices is what makes that walk to the promenade important.

And, some music usually comes of it.

Good Coffee

I have been perfecting great coffee for some time now, both espresso and regular coffee. My morning is never complete without a French Press. I can even go so far as to say that the French Press has been the apparatus that sparks musical inspiration.

P.S. I'm rebuilding my studio in my new pad located in Brooklyn Heights. I finally found the coffee press buried in a box of microphones.

NYC Relocation

So there has been major construction going on at my apartment in Brooklyn. It's been absolutely terrible. I wake up at 8am with a drill bit in the my skull and dry-wall dust wafting into my lungs. So I've relocated to the upper west side temporarily to get sleep, peace and quiet, and have the slightest possible chance to write some music...

Peaceful today in Santa Monica. Then, apparently and unbeknownst to me, there was a 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Mexico that apparently was felt in L.A. I was lying on the beach near the PCH and felt nothing. Very weird.

'ello peeps...i'm back in Los Angeles this weekend. Partly for some time with my younger brother (and terrific screenwriter at USC Film School) as well as for a much needed spacial change from Brooklyn for some new songwriting inspiration. I've got to change scenes every now and again to gain some perspective. During Christmas this past year, snowy New Hampshire became my oasis. This weekend, it'll be L.A.-- a town I'm pretty familiar with, but still want to find a root to grab onto.

Had some breakfast this morning in Los Feliz at Mustard Cafe and have been catching up with my brother. We're going to visit one of his film shoots tomorrow morning in Hollywood and I might check out a few of my favorite vintage music shops as well. Though I need to be very careful there. I should leave all my credit cards at home lest I get too tempted to make another large pruchase.

I'll keep you updated on some new song ideas and some new moods I might stumble upon here in L.A. It's a city I certainly don't feel as connected to as New York, but one that I've grown fond of after many shows and many visits over the years. I think we'll hit Umami Burger tonight. So good.

Writing stumbles

I started writing a couple new songs today at my apartment. The melodies are slowly shaping, but lyrically, I feel odd. I was playing with a few ideas for lyrics, but I honestly began to not quite believe myself in what I was saying and writing. It's a weird feeling and even stranger to admit. I feel these writing-ruts sometimes and it's hard to talk my way out of them. It's like I am in a room that I want to leave, but I can't find the door.

The good news is that I've been in this place before. I recognize it. It usually takes a day or two to find my way. It's frustrating, but not new. It's not exactly writer's block per se because the words and melodies are flowing. Rather, it's a "lack of writer's credence" or something like that. If I talk about love, I don't feel like I really mean it. If I talk about things that bother me, I don't feel compassion for myself. I compare it to an actor whose actions on stage seem perfunctory. It's all just sort of grey. Nothing is defined or committed. There doesn't seem to be conviction or color in the words I am writing, despite those same words having meaning in other songs I've written that I love.

Alas, I'll keep pushing.

Film: Crazy Heart / Jeff Bridges

I saw the new Jeff Bridges film "Crazy Heart" last night with my brother in New York. I had been really eager to see this film because it was sort of an indie project that nearly didn't get a distributor once it was completed. Jeff Bridges, one of my all time favorite actors, is just so incredibly real in this film about an old country singer/songwriter still trying to make it and keep success going. It was a wonderful film with a lot of themes close to me as a touring artist and songwriter. Some of it was comical in its "relatability" for me, while other parts were sad because I know the feeling of being on the road and being lonely, low on cash, and wondering if you're pursuing the right path...in the end though, it's about the music and what it does to you.

New Hampshire Notes #2

Been in the mountains for about a week. I can certainly admit that I did not come through the door and jump right on my guitar to write half a dozen great songs. It never works like that. I had to really get into a certain mood to feel good about working on some ideas. Finally, two days ago, I began to feel that "pull." It's a weird sense and attraction, like a magnet, to my instruments and notebook.

I have several strong ideas working right now and it's feeling pretty good. There is one tune in particular that I've been working well on, but I have not found a chorus for it that really clicks. The ideas are there, but it's not complete. The odd thing is I can almost feel the chorus coming, but I just can't seem to find it. Right now, it's a faint sketch in the distance. It's almost as if I am groping in the dark for something that I know is there. There is a particular combination of vocal melodies and guitar chords that will fit, eventually. At the moment, I have not been combining my ingredients in the right way to make this dish taste good-- and you just know when it tastes good.

The good news is, I can feel that the song is on its way. The ideas are floating there. It's a matter of pulling them down and assembling them into place, like a puzzle. Once the ideas of a song are settled and they fit together, I usually get a feeling in my stomach similar to that of being starving and then immediately sitting down for an amazing steak dinner at Peter Luger in Brooklyn. You can see the food right in front of you on the table that are you about to eat to fill your hunger. Have I provided enough analogies?

In New Hampshire

I have arrived to New Hampshire (White Mountain National Forest) and I'm hauled up in a ski bungalow with several guitars, microphones, computer(s), recording gear, books (novels), plenty of fire wood, wine, selected cheeses, guinness stout, jameson irish whiskey, and my songbook. New York is my home and my life, but having some time in reclusion is just what I need. The bustling of the City is what keeps me going, yet it can be that same bustling, which jumbles my thoughts, keeps me unfocused, and makes me anxious to get things done quickly in order to keep up. I have learned myself that "getting things done quickly" is never the right way, especially with songwriting and subsequent album-making.

So, I decided in November, around Thanksgiving, that I would leave my band behind in New York, temporarily, to travel to New Hampshire to really focus on flushing out my ideas and coming up with some melodies and lyrics that were well-crafted with the help of important elements like vino rosso and warm fires.

I built a grand fire last night, my first night, and it was while I was sitting there on the bricks with a glass of whiskey that I began to think clearly about the many song ideas I've put together since the summer. I was actually quite surprised that it was my eyes looking into the fire that led me to feel good about being in the mountains. Most of the time I hear something that inspires me. But, in solitude, I think one begins to draw from many sources because the man in solitude only has himself. There are no distractions. His "friends" become his eyes, hands, his thoughts, his ears. I know some of this sounds ridiculous and melodramatically poetic, like I'm some kind of Thoreau or Rousseau wanna-be. But, I can only explain what I feel. And, if those feelings yield great songs, then I will know what I write here in this blog entry is truth. If I come back to Brooklyn with a bag of frozen horse shit, then I will know this was all bullocks...But hopefully this will not be the case.

I have just made some coffee with cinnamon and have to attend to it. I'll keep you updated here as things progress this week and will add some more photos. I can say with all sincerity that I truly appreciate the love from you guys since being off the tour road while I've been working on this new album. It's been a longtime, but I decided I had to dedicate myself to getting something great out there for you...stay with me on this.

Back to the basics

This weekend I've been re-listening to the new box set of The Beatles...every song, every album. "Revolver" still owns me. Good headspace as I grab my Martin.

Rehearsals

Had the first rehearsal tonight with the guys since January. The record isn't finished yet, but it felt great to get back to the rehearsal space and test drive a few of the new songs, while also going back to some older and more familiar ones. There are some kinks that need to be ironed out, especially with translating some of the newer songs from the studio to the live setting, but I'm really encouraged by tonight. It's always hard reconvening for rehearsals because I automatically want us to just rock it and kill every song. But, in reality these things take time and work. Even the older songs need a slight re-touch. We can't sound terrific after just one rehearsal, nor should we, or we wouldn't be really striving to get any better. The boys and I work our asses off, which is why I know each rehearsal is better than the previous. Their dedication means everything to me, so I'm confident by all this.

We'll keep pressing onward. I want to get back to the stage soon. It's been more than a year since Bowery Ballroom show in New York and I know the boys and I are truly itching to be back in front of you all. It's been a long road. Staying positive is important.

The studio has been treating the band and I very well, but it has been a long year with a lot of writing. With 55 new songs written (and most recorded), I'm happy to be in a position of having to choose 10-12 for the new album, rather than scrambling to fill the last few spots on the record. I have a ton of material that I'm really excited about. The sound is quite different.

Films (noir et les autres)

While writing and working on the new songs, I've been also watching a ton of old films that I had always heard and read about, but never had a chance to see. In recent weeks, I've watched "Amarcord" and "8 1/2" by Fellini, "Last Tango In Paris," as well as "Breathless" and "Band of Outsiders" by Godard. One of my favorite films of all time that is in my own DVD collection: "Jules et Jim" by Fançois Truffaut. There is something amazingly true and honest about these films. Admittedly, Fellini can be pretty odd and unrealistically dream-like at times, but the language and the writing has just hit me certain ways because it reminds of me of how some musicians phrase their lyrics-- a good song, lyrically speaking, phrases lines in a way that isn't out-right obvious in its meaning, but can be understood if thought about only for a few more seconds (does that make any sense??). I hope so. Here's a clip from "Band of Outsiders" ("Bande à Part" en Français).

I think last year while touring, the road began to wear on me a bit. I could see the fatigue in the band as well. I decided in November of 2008 to take a breather and really hunker down on writing a great bunch of new songs. I wanted them to brew a bit. I had just moved to a new place in Brooklyn and I knew my unfamiliar surroundings would help keep inspiration strong. Since November, I've been able to get together roughly 50 new songs (some much, much, much stronger than others). I really feel that the break was a success. Having been in my studio to write and record for more than 8 months, I can also say that the road is calling. I miss it. I miss the cramped van, the sweating to load gear into the venue, the frustrated sound-techs who may not want to be at the venue that night, my band, and the feedback from all you guys afterwards.

What is hard about taking a touring break for an artist is that he/she fears that those who've followed him will leave or worse, forget. There is only so much an artist can do to keep people at his side for the long term. Much of it depends on the motivation of the fans. So many of you have been asking what's been going on and when I'll be returning to the stage...the time is soon. I thank you for staying with me and pushing this forward. In the end, an artist needs an ear. I don't write just for myself, otherwise I'd lock myself in a room below ground and just play all day everyday and never leave. The pull comes from those who listen and those who care. I'm like a kid who wants to show his parents a new trick, but the trick in this case is a serious trick-- one that just may have the power to affect someone in a significant way.

Ramblings? Or, Ruminations.

During the process of working on this new album, I've gone through many moods-- satisfaction, happiness, frustration, anxiety, and all the rest. It's been pretty conducive to the "art," which I like. But, the point is, each album has its own drive. It's like getting into a new car. Yes, they all have 2 pedals and a steering wheel, but the feel is different each time-- thus there can't be any expectations before the process starts. I've had ups and downs this year and I'm hoping the new songs will strike a chord (seriously, no pun intended) in you guys who've stayed behind me. Fortunately there seem to be a lot of you; that support of which I can't fully express how much it means to me.

I've even had thoughts of moving away from my long time home of New York...trying something new, a fresh landscape. But, in the end, the music keeps motivating me and I'm not tired of it, despite the inconsistencies of this pursuit. I can only write what drives me and create something that will stir thoughts in myself and others who connect with it.

...some cool cover songs are coming for you all soon (sort of a small sample in the interim of hearing the new album). I think they'll hit in a good way.

It's been awhile, but all is ok. I swear. I've been locked in a really productive studio with loads of coffee.

It's truthfully a b-side, because I'm not so sure it'll make the cut for the new album, but I wanted to toss some of the new ideas out there in the meantime. So, grab a listen. The song is called "Things I Could Say." Hope you dig, even though it's a b-side. It has a rough and raw vibe to it, but there's something about the track that I like. Perhaps its imperfections.

I was just made aware by my astute (and well-connected) manager, that two tracks from the "Still Life Moves" album will debut tonight on the season premiere of Real World Brooklyn tonight Wed Jan 7 at 10PM EST. hey guys...just FYI, I've started the Twitter thing. I didn't really know what it was until I read an article about it. But, I think it's a cool way of keeping you guys updated during the writing and recording process in quick little bursts.

I really want you all to be connected to what's going on since i'm not on the road right now, without having to wait for really verbose and sometimes infrequent blog posts. so, if you're on twitter, jump on and follow me. Halloween? Serious Business

Peeps,

I haven't really taken Halloween all that seriously in recent years. It's too much for me. It's stressful, damn it. So much expectation and yet so little time.

But, this year, I have decided to make a concerted effort to put out a statement. Some friends have invited me to a grand 'ol Halloween Party in New York and I have to come En Masque. Thus, I have devised a killer (pun intended) costume. Now, obviously I cannot reveal what my costume is now on the blog until November 1 (when there will be ample photographic evidence of the aforementioned "killer costume"), but, I will say now that I have reached back into the vault of Hollywood cinema and brought back a classically frightening character. I am not saying that this idea is the most original or that it has never been emulated before. But, what I am saying is that when I do something, I do it right. I make sure every detail is just as it should be. So, while others may have merely imitated, I will be resurrecting this character in all its brilliant form and detail.

new brooklyn digs

yo guys,

So in the last week I have moved to a new apartment. The move itself was surprisingly easy, compared to moves in the past that involve serious stress and sweat. this time, it was only sweat. but, driving a U-Haul in Manhattan is treacherous. I wouldn't recommend it. It reminded me of that scene in "Dumb and Dumber" when the dog truck flies over a hill and slams onto the pavement at 50 mph (van driven by Jeff Daniels).

Anyway, I'm still getting settled, but I have huge place with tons of sunlight, plants everywhere, and a gorgeous roof-deck on top of the building facing Manhattan. It's all very comfortable, but it's still not "my home" yet. That'll take a few more weeks I think. My new place is like having a new girlfriend: comfort comes with time. I'm not ready to walk around my kitchen naked in the daylight yet.

This week, I've been rebuilding my recording studio now in my new place. It's all coming together quite nicely. I broke out the acoustic and a microphone late last night in my living room just sampling a few ideas I've been working on lately. The new songs are taking great shape and great emotion.

quick shout my lovely peoples...from Brooklyn, NY. I got an email yesterday from a sweet gal in Memphis, TN who politely asked me where she could find my albums out on the web to download for free. She said, "I'm bummed because I can't find the whole albums on lime wire anymore." That was a quote. Seriously. She asked me if I had a different suggestion than lime wire.

I was quite perplexed by this note, though I appreciated her interest in the getting the music so immediately. As many of you guys know and understand, being an artist today in the collapsing music industry is not easy. Touring, promotion, and recording all cost enormous amounts of money that I can't even begin to explain...One Month U.S.

So, I love you guys like crazy and you all keep me afloat by coming out to the shows everywhere I've been lucky enough to tour in the world (literally the world). But, please I beg you, for the love of what I do as an artist and someone trying to be relevant in your world: support me, support the music, support what we as artists do. The work and time we put in can suck the life out of an artist sometimes. If you love the music you're hearing and want me to have the power to continue, please purchase the albums with money. I want you to have them and play them. Just remember how much went into it all before it reached your ears.

Sorry this has taken so stupidly long. It's almost bordering on non-relevance. I sort of kind of got pre-occupied, then remembered, then forgot, then got emails from you guys asking for the setlist.

It was bloody awesome to be back home in New York at the Bowery Ballroom. We had a total blast with Kill the Alarm and the show was just electric on many levels (not literally because we played acoustic). But, you get the idea. Thanks to so many of you all for making it a hell of a show. The balcony was especially impressive.

The Yanks

i had the pleasure of going to a Yankees game in the final week of Yankee Stadium. I've been a huge Yankee fan from birth and even pursued baseball pretty damn seriously until music stripped me of my baseball ambitions. So, getting to go back to the Bronx and see my Yanks play this last year at the Stadium was pretty stellar. My darling friend Phoebe invited me along. I thoroughly enjoyed field level seats, $11 beers, and an $8 hot dog. I actually really did enjoy all of those things. I did think that my car was going to be chopped and sold for parts in the shady lot off 158th Street I found. Fortunately "Jimmy," my trustworthy and steadfast parking lot guardian man said he only had to drive the car around the block twice while I was inside the stadium at the game.

"Well, thanks Jimmy, you really are swell."

Hey Guys:

In response to a handfull of emails I've received in the last week: yes, the new music is coming shortly. I apologize for the delay. I'm just trying to get it right. I should have a preview by early Fall (even though it is sort of early Fall right now). It's been a very busy summer with a ton of traveling to Asia, Portland, Seattle, and L.A., a huge show back home at Bowery Ballroom in NYC, and now nothing but recording. Rest assured that all these things have brought about some serious inspiration. There is just this new tone and this new headspace to the songs that I haven't charted yet until now. It's exciting. The songs are revealing. My vocals seem very emphatic and deliberate. I like that.

In the meantime, here are some films and books (old and new) that have me thoroughly enthralled in the last couple months while at home in New York and on the road:

Hi Friends-

I'm back on the west coast and blogging from Los Angeles again. It's been a nice week. I had just gotten back to NYC from Japan and then hopped on another plane for some recording here in L.A. I'm very stoked about the new songs and I have a ton of ideas I can't wait for you all to hear.

At the end of this week, I'm jetting back to New York quickly for a huge, big, great, grand show at the Bowery Ballroom. It will be an electric night. See all you New York-area fans and lovers there. I promise a killer night at the Bowery. Show is at 8PM.

In addition to recording here in L.A., I've also been helping my younger brother move into a new apartment. My brotherly love has extended to building saw-dust desks purchased at Staples. I'm getting quite good at building these things...anyway, enough rambling here. Just wanted to give you a short update. I'm at a coffee shop in Manhattan Beach right now. The ocean is pretty amazing.

Yes, I am in JAPAN

Hey Guys-
Great to hear from so many of you via email here on the road in Japan. Thanks for the love on the "Bizarre Love Triangle" cover. I've always been a huge New Order fan. It was sort of an experiment and I just happened to hit "record" at my studio.

I'm blogging from Tokyo right now. It's been an amazing week traveling around Japan. I started in the mid-section of the island in Himeji, Japan and then visited Kyoto. The food has been terrific, having delved into Sukiyaki style bbq, traditional sushi, and Japanese BBQ (which is similar to Korean BBQ). I am a total foodie. The fish is the freshest I have ever tasted and the Japanese eat toro tuna (from the fish belly and very expensive), like it's chicken. It's ubiquitous and I now I cannot go back to regular sushi I normally eat in New York. My hotel in Tokyo is something out of "Lost in Translation." I have an amazing view of the Tokyo Tower and central Tokyo.

Ruminating and new ideas

Hey Everyone-

I just climbed out of my studio after several days and many French Presses full of Italian coffee. I had been on the road non-stop for nearly 2 years and this is truly the first time I've had no tour dates coming up for the moment. I really want to spend some time with these new songs and new ideas. Sometimes I have felt rushed to release new material and get an album out as soon as possible, but the bottom line is that the music means everything, not timing. I have some topics on my mind that are coming out in these songs and I'm eager to share it all. I have contemplated the struggle of seeing people do things they don't want to be doing in their life. I am thinking about niches, if that makes any sense. I want to hone these songs and shape them just right.

I've also gotten to spend some time out of New York. I've been traveling a bit with a guitar on my back, just thinking and writing, observing and ruminating. I'll be taking some trips later in the summer to Asia and Europe. It has been a long time since I have been to both locales for it not part of a tour.

...Being in the studio has its drawbacks though. I feel I need to drum up my own support and be my own motivator. I need you all. The relationship we have keeps my heart-rate constant.

hey guys...currently in Denver. Working on some new material with musical friends and off to Oregon tomorrow to hang with my pal Justin King at his {not-so} humble abode in Eugene, OR. It's more like a musical castle. We'll be clunking our heads together, writing, recording, drinking plenty of vino and just breathing fresh air in the high mountains of Oregon. The last time I was out there with the band we had an absolute blast and the scenery is more beautiful than anywhere one can imagine.

Notes from New York

Been feeling a little weird lately. The boys and I had a great tour that spanned a lot of miles and met some great fans (old and new) on the road. But, my mood has felt a little burned out. I don't know whether it's the release of fatigue immediately after a record release when there has been so much planning to make the new album successful. I can't say really. I've been doing the "artist thing" for 7 seven years. It's been quite a road, literally and figuratively. I've had enough frustrations to want to quit about every month. But, for some reason, I'm still at it and I guess I can say things have been good. We've got an amazing group of fans worldwide, I've traveled the world, and have had some pretty cool opportunities along the way with press, TV, and other forms of noteriety.

But, so much goes into all of this that the immediate rewards aren't always apparent. It's difficult and most of the time, it's the artist himself who has to proverbially drum up his own support to keep the motivation going strong. I've always said, "the phone won't ring unless I make the call." I think that's still true. Nothing happens unless the "pursuer" makes it happen. Sometimes, it's hard. Sometimes, I feel tired about having to be my own biggest fan.

At the moment, I'm home in New York and off the road. I like it. I can breathe and breathe deeply. I'm working on some new song ideas and so far, it's really coming through. I want to sit on these ideas for a bit and not record them until I've really sculpted these songs carefully. I've got some new influences and inspirations and I feel good about it. I'll also be doing some traveling. I'm still figuring out my locales, but I'm planning on Japan this summer. I want something different. I've toured Europe and have traveled extensively there. I lived in Italy for a year, but Asia is new ground to me.

So, what's my point? I'm not entirely sure. Just some thoughts out-loud I guess. I'm happy, but admittedly tired. Sometimes an artist needs a push from more than himself. Along the way, the band and I have had some tough shows and some long nights on the road. It's wears on me (and probably them too). This is a tough pursuit and the rewards don't always equal the energy input and personal investments. I think that can always be a difficult combination...working harder than what will come back to you. But, for some reason, I still maintain a level of self-efficacy that I hope will push me to press on...I hope you all will be behind me.

It poured, it thundered, we got soaked. But, the show was killer. We stripped the set-up down a bit from the normal electric tones...My voice was feeling a little raspy, but I pushed through.

Notes from Los Angeles

Hey All-
Just finished the west coast tour run and have had a day to clear my thoughts here in Los Angeles. It was really a great week that started in Seattle, hit Vancouver, then down to Portland (where we picked up our bro Justin King), then down to San Francisco, and finished in L.A. at the Troubadour.

We hit snow and sleat in northern California and totally muddled our van up with road "goop." We never ate a healthy meal, except when we went for really solid Mexican food in Seattle with our friends Kyle and Mandi Stevens. I also ate well when I got sushi in L.A. The road has an odd way of exciting me as well as draining me literally at the same time. There are moments of pure elation followed by "I want my bed."

But, we’ve played hundreds of shows all over the place and at this point, I’m quite used to it. Throughout the time on the road I’ve been continuing to write and really have some cool ideas for some new material. I’ll hash them out in the coming weeks. I’ll be back to NYC later today. I’m battling a bad flu/cold thing. My throat burns, I’m coughing with conviction, and my head is stuffed like a balloon.

I’ll be home in NYC for 2 days, then we drive down to Charlotte, NC for the southeast turn.

Hey Guys-

on the tour road and thought i'd stop by and drop some love on the blog...things have been going very well, but it's been raining like crazy. we really had a blast in Seattle, Vancouver, and last night in Portland. The shows have been killer and the people have been amazing. So great to see so many of you at the shows thus far.

i'm hanging in Eugene, OR with our buddy Justin King at his studio and house up in the Oregon mountains. it's pretty unbelievable and we're enjoying some gorgeous Italian coffee at the moment. the house reminds me of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre.

So, off to San Francisco in a little bit...I hope all of you are well. We've got some great shows coming up this week including tomorrow 3/27 in San Francisco with Justin King and Ari Hest. We'll then be back at the Troubadour on Friday 3/28 in Los Angeles.

I always buy movies because I want to have them at my desposal whenever I'd like them. I've been getting some really great notes from many of you guys anticipating the new album. i appreciate this very much. it all means so much. there have been some doubts and some up and down moments in the last several months. the record wasn't easy to make (and they never are). but, the contact i get from you all keeps me in check...and gets the ideas in a lucid state.

still writing a few new thoughts in the last two weeks that are staying with me. i find if i can remember the vocal melody of a song idea without having to hear the demo again on my laptop, then it's the making of a good song. working, working, working. stay with me my friends...

Live in New York - Mercury Lounge 12/30/2007

The last of 2007 was pretty slammin'. The boys and I were back at the Mercury Lounge for another terrific night right before New Year's Eve. We were all excited and even hung Christmas lights behind the drum kit for festive purposes only. I decided to down 3 glasses of Disaronno Amaretto before the set...I usually do this to warm the 'ol vocal chords, but this time I was also trying to soothe a sore throat and take some edge off. For some reason, I was a little nervous before this one. I don't really know why for certain. Usually, I'm totally fine and ready to rock. Perhaps it was because the band and I were debuting a few new songs or maybe it was from the fact that we were home in NYC and there are usually more people that know me personally at home in New York. I wanted it to be a good one.

In all honesty, it's been a long 2007 filled with plenty of truly great times as well as some down moments. I lost my drummer and friend Chris Williams at the end of 2006 and also went through some frustrating industry-related things that made me question all that I was doing. Nonetheless, the band and I had a terrific summer tour between NYC and L.A. and even had a considerable amount of MTV love. We decided that recording a new album in the Fall and Winter of 2007 was the best decision to push things in a further positive direction. We had so many new songs and lyrical ideas...there had to be a place to put it all together.

I get nervous when I venture into a new project, especially an album. There is expectation from those listening and watching and there is also self-expectation. I don't want to fail. I want people to latch onto the songs and understand what I am saying. I want people to really become part of what I'm doing. Those that know me personally and even just on myspace know that I spend a lot of time conversing with email and messages to people...But, pressure to perform and continue to do relevant things create times of uncertainty. All these things probably came to a head on 12/30 at the Merc, when I began the process of infusing the setlist with some of the new material....there is that "Ok, here we go again from the beginning" feeling that one gets when they're starting something new and presenting it to a room full of eager listeners who, mind you, are educated music lovers.

We had a great crowd on hand at the Merc and I hope we're off to a good start now that 2008 has arrived. I hope the audiences grow and the people already involved in my world fall in love with the new songs. The new album will be released in early March.

The support means so much. You all have no idea. Being an artist is thankless 90% of the time...not by the fans of course, but by the nature of the pursuit.

In London at the moment. I'm getting to know the town quite well now, having been able to get back to England a couple times a year, at least, for touring and all. Spending Christmas and the holiday here and currently writing down a few new song ideas. I know what you're thinking: "Alex, you have a new album coming soon. What the hell do you mean by new material at this point?" Well, I can't seem to stop I guess. When I have something, I have to write it down. I heard a melody on the plane over from New York and recorded it on my Mac, humming the tune in my seat.

Ok, another cool thing about this trip....Continental Airlines bumped me up to First Class for free. I asked nicely and they just gave it to me. I was astounded. Perhaps my charm is worth even more than I thought.

Anyway, sitting here in cold and sort of rainy Mayfair section of London, near Oxford St. It's gorgeous despite the melancholy weather.

LIVE in LANCASTER - Chameleon Club

Had a great time back down in Lancaster, though we almost hit a horse and carriage. This thing came out of no where on a city street while at a traffic light. The band and I have been able to play the Chameleon Club quite a lot at this point. It's just an amazing room with super sound. Although, we did have to wear scarves and coats during soundcheck. The heating inside the venue seemed to be a challenge. The boys and I were with Tim Reynolds on Saturday night, Dec 8. He was terrific.

Dan decided to leave his entire cymbal bag in Manhattan (he realized this small detail when we were 20 miles outside of Lancaster), so we had to make a snap decision to find a music store in Lancaster, just hours before the gig. Next time, I'll try and forget my guitar in San Francisco when we have a show in Boston.

...fortunately it ended well. Now we can laugh. Show was slammin'. Great to see so many of you out there.

Ok, so few tour dates? Not a lot of bulletins? Lapse in consistent blog entries? This is just crazy. Some may be wondering where the hell I am...maybe not, but I'm gonna tell you anyway. The new record is coming. It's coming like a freight train and there's a lot of weight behind it. I am so psyched about the new songs. They have great energy and some sweet ethereal moods.

Jeff, Dan, and I have been hard at work here in New York doing pre-production. So, that may be the reason for our silence. But, rest assured, there is a terrific bunch of songs coming your way and there will be full national tour and a few European dates to follow the release. The album release date is up in the air, but we're shooting for the Winter, if that is vague enough for you.

SHOWS: We are doing a small amount of Northeast U.S.A. shows and always keeping our eyes peeled for nice little colleges who need a rockin' night...if your school wants to be on the Fall tour, shoot an email to BOOKING@ALEXNACKMAN.COM so we can get it done for you.

The guys and I have finally been home for a couple weeks since returning from the road. Working on plenty of new songs and taking a breather is sort of what we all needed. The tour has been great, the people we've met along the way from L.A. to Boston have been amazing, but home is home. New York welcomed us back. The Mercury Lounge has become a pretty familiar place for us. We know the smells, we know the look, we know the vibe.

The 8/14 show was no different. It was a rock night. I made sure to keep the Fender on tight and try to really turn up the 'ol volume nob on the Vox for this one...the crowd was terrific. We had our own team of dancers in the front and some romantics in the back. I was a little uncertain about only doing the trio for this big NYC return show, but by the end, I was convinced that Dan and Jeff are able to bring the rock...hard. Brian was not with us, as he was on tour with Pat McGee. Either way, we had an absolute killer time in the east village. "Tuesday," an unreleased/new song felt pretty great. We're working on a slightly new arrangement of that one. More studio news later my babies...

Notes from the pacific northwest

In Seattle at the moment...drove up from Oregon with the band. It's been a good west coast run thus far. Eugene was a blast with the Justin King Band. It's been blazing hot though. I thought the Pacific Northwest would be a much needed relief from the New York City heat wave. I was quite mistaken.

Yesterday we were on the hunt for the Turtle Sundae at Dairy Queen. The band and I drove 150 miles to find what we were searching for. Finally we found it. It was quite delicious. There is video blogging footage of this. Check on Youtube.com in the next day or two. Last night we also enjoyed a Seattle dinner at P.F. Chiengs. The Singapore Noodles are quite good.

You guys can check them out, hear me make mistakes, hit wrong notes, and basically sus out some ideas in a very organic way from my studio. The first song up there right now is a working version of a track called "something remains." the song has slightly changed since the recording was made, but hey, that's what this is all about, right?

i had a really nice return home to New York at the Mercury Lounge on 6/10. Despite Sunday being a huge HBO night, people still fit Alex Nackman in their schedule. It's been a wild ride touring with the new band and getting used to everyone's idiosyncracies. The guys and I are meshing so well. It's a difficult thing to find truly great musicians that you can glue together in a meaningful and "untransient" way. There is so much talent out there, but not all of those talented people are best for one's own band. It takes time. Getting back to the Merc was sort of an affirmation that things are heading in that positive direction. I say "positive" because I've learned the hard way about getting hopes up about things-- in everything. I very much take things in stride and often with many grains of salt. I think being a musician, on the road, constantly developing his craft, figuring out what works, and not always having a clear direction of where to go lends itself to patience and perspective.

so great to meet a bunch of you guys after the Merc show. Thanks for the multiple Coronas as well.

I'm a pretty avid cook when I'm off the road and out of the studio. It started quite rudimentary with the simple and ubiquitous hamburger, steak, and the like. I've moved on to breaded veal in a red wine reduction over sun-dried tomato pasta and other Italian inspired dishes, after living in Florence, Italy for almost half a year. Yes, I am a lover of the Food Network. Giada De Laurentiis is gorgeous.

I was giving this recipe to a friend via email and thought I'd also share it with the world, to those interested in trying. It's an easy one, so don't be turned off by the length here. I'm just really verbose.

VODKA CHICKEN CASSEROLE with PROSCIUTTO

Your Ingredients:

-Box of ziti
-jar of vodka sauce
-3-4 breasts of boneless skinless chicken
-1/4 lb of good sliced prosciutto
-good extra virgin olive oil
-fresh parmigiana cheese
-fresh mozzarella cheese
-lots of garlic
-Half a red onion
-package of small mushrooms
-fresh flat leaf parsley
-fresh basil

So, dice a few cloves of garlic, toss them into a hot pan with olive
oil. Let them sweat for a few seconds. Slice red onion and add those
to the garlic and oil. Slice the shrooms into small-medium pieces and
add those also. Let it all mix together with salt and pepper for a
minute so the flavors blend.

Cube up your chicken breasts. Salt them. Pepper them. Touch them. Add
them to the pan with the onions, garlic, etc. Dice up your prosciutto into small
pieces or strips only an inch in length. Add those to your chicken pan AFTER the
chicken is cooked through. Grab a pasta pot. Boil water and salt that water for the ziti.

Time this right. The pasta cooks faster than the chicken. So, put the
pasta in the water at the tail end of the chicken's cooking time. You
want the chicken to be brown. While all of this craziness is going on,
pre-heat your oven to 400 degrees.

A minute or so before the pasta is finished, open the jar of vodka
sauce. quickly sauté some more garlic pieces in olive oil in a sauce
pot (medium size). Add the sauce to the oil and garlic. keep the heat
on low for the sauce. When the sauce is hot, add the
chicken/onion/mushroom mixture from the pan directly into the sauce
pot. Stir well.

Grab a casserole dish, that is deep. Add the ziti into that casserole
dish. Add the sauce with all the goodies into the casserole dish. Stir
well and mix. Spoon over a liberal amount of parmigiana cheese over
the top as well as a nice helping of freshly minced basil. Slice your
mozz cheese into olympic medal-sized circles. Place those on top of
the casserole.

Put the dish into the over for about 15 minutes...but keep a close eye
on it. You want the cheese to melt, but not burn. After that, take it
out, sprinkle more parmigiana on top and finish with freshly minced
parsley.

I had a late night with the director of my video, David Ambrose, in the Carol Gardens section of Brooklyn last night. I'm pretty happy with the footage thus far. We filmed much of it in Brooklyn (Red Hook, DUMBO) and also parts of Chelsea in Manhattan. There is a somewhat gritty feel to the video overall. I should have a preliminary cut within the next week.

Thoughts on memory

Rainy, overcast Friday in New York City. I've been getting a few things together today for my short trip to Birmingham, AL this weekend. I'm back at Workplay Theatre, which will be very cool. But, I'm solo acoustic...a kind of show I haven't done in awhile. It's a bit bizarre for me to say that, though, because I started the first 4 years of my career doing nothing but solo acoustic shows (over 400 of them). So, why would I feel odd about going back to my roots? I guess I'm just really comfortable now with the guys I'm playing with. They know my songs well enough to tell me when I made a mistake in rehearsal.

Moving on....There are also a ton of new ideas for songs in my proverbial "song hopper." The topics have changed slightly from direct love ballads to memory and nostalgia. I find it fascinating how small elements in life trigger really profound and poignant memories. A song on the radio, a smell in a restaurant, a scene in a film. All of these things have become the backdrop and the under-coating of many of my new songs.

I don't think one ever forgets a memory. It just needs to be resurrected sometimes by a link between past and present. Comments?

Back to London. I’m really getting to know this city pretty well—even how to deal with the drunks who have approached me on Charing Cross over 7 times. For some reason, they’ve always asked me for a sausage. This is peculiar. Being back at the Borderline was a great feeling--so much history in there—sort of like the CBGBs or Bitter End of England. The Borderline has a chronology of bands who’ve come through posted on the stone walls. Let’s just say that the Rolling Stones have graced the stage in their younger days. The room itself looks as though it could’ve served as a dungeon for King George or even earlier, maybe William of Orange (is that 1066? Who says musicians aren’t up to date on their English medieval history).

Room was filled and the audience was into it---I tried to be extra funny that night, but I failed. My jokes were less effective. Perhaps the music was more effective. I hadn’t played “Roll With It” in such a long time and broke it out of the vault at the risk of forgetting entire verses at a time. Fortunately, all was nailed without a hitch. Chatted it up with some fans post show. C.R. Avery, from Vancouver, played after with his awesome beat poetry---he jumped on the bar and grabbed my hat while I was having a pint…crazy kid. Great to be back in jolly ‘ol. At a Starbucks and I hate paying 8 pounds for an hour of internet…exchange rate bastards. Tonight I’m off for some London fun—no gig. I think I’ll see a flick with some mates and eat Indian food---yes, off to Leicester Sq kids.

Such an awesome night in New York and my first NYC show in nearly 3 months, after all the studio work I've been caught up in this winter season. The Cutting Room, in Chelsea, had been an old burlesque theatre and the room has that 1930s Moulin Rouge feel. The sound of the high ceilings was also great.

The room was packed with eager New Yorkers. It was so great to see everyone out, especially on a Wednesday night. I even got a chance to hang with many of you at the bar before and after the show. I love the interaction. I played mostly new stuff, with a few older tunes thrown in. Sorry for the short set people...flying to Washington DC tomorrow and in the studio with Pat McGee boys.

Studio update: NEW YORK to L.A. travel and work

Still more work being done in the studio, but it's sounding terrific. The new record has a much different vibe than the current releases. After spending some time in England as well as having a hectic winter season of traveling and being away from home in New York, Alex surely has some stories to tell. The Brit-rock influence has seaped into the new songs. "Proximity," an upcoming track, was leaked for one week on MySpace (www.myspace.com/alexnackman).

In addition, "Tuesday" is currently at www.alexnackman.com as the start-up song. These new songs will only be available for a limited time, up until the album is released.

Los Angeles road journal: LIVE @ THE ROXY THEATRE

Well, back to NYC from L.A. We had a great time back at the Roxy Theatre. I truly love this room, and it's got so much history. I caught Pat McGee and Stephen Kellogg at the Roxy the night before...followed by a little after party at the Rainbow Room next door on Sunset.

Ok, another point: i can't stand snoring. I shared a hotel room with my bassist Pat Porter--I love this guy, but he snored like rhino for 5 hours straight. It was a like tuba shouting at an elephant farting. I finally passed out from pure exhaustion at 5:30 AM and managed to rack up 2 hrs of undisturbed sleep. I think Pat slept just fine.

Onto the show. soundcheck for our show was a little crazy on 3/16, but the show was great, despite being a somewhat shorter set. Thank you Cali for all the support. It was terrific seeing all you out there. I debuted several brand new songs including "Dionysus" and "Proximity." Drummer Chris Williams (from the Pat McGee Band) was with me as well as guest bassist Patrick Porter, hailing from Richmond, VA. L.A. has always been close to me and it's exciting to be back in town.

New York City based rocker Alex Nackman is climbing to the top of the proverbial singer-songwriter music scene with his personal blend of acoustic rock fare that critics have described as insightful and introspective, yet also melancholy and inquisitive. His well received 2003 studio debut “Good Impressions”, and following tour, gave Nackman the chance to hone his live performance. After a solid year of touring in the northeast, Alex’s songs could be heard on College-town coffee shop mixes from Washington DC to Bangor, ME. With continued self-publicity work, touring, and free sampler mailings to all fans (at which point three post offices in three states in the northeast knew Alex’s first name), Alex’s honest songs were spreading. Soon, he garnered opening spots for an impressive host of headliners including The Roots, Norah Jones, Glen Phillips (formerly of Toad the Wet Sprocket), Pat McGee Band, and Ari Hest among many others. Peter Baker of Fly Magazine said in 2003 of Alex’s “Good Impressions” release, “He writes lyrics that betray the fact that Nackman himself is just 20 years old.”

Nackman has toured extensively and successfully throughout all parts of the U.S. and many parts of Europe hitting top venues, colleges, and universities. With the amount of touring and road experience Alex has under his belt, there’s little mystery as to why press from L.A. to London has continued to back him. Now 22 years old, Alex has managed to rack up hundreds of shows (including two separate full European tours) with an international following, on the strength of his sharp and clever songwriting, and personable stage appeal. It also should be noted that as the consummate businessman and negotiator, Alex has booked every single show he has ever performed.

In August 2004, Nackman released a live EP entitled “Stages | EP,” bringing together live tracks recorded at Eddie’s Attic (Atlanta), Makor (NYC), and The Point (Bryn Mawr, PA). It was in September 2004, when Alex first brought his touring to Europe, as he earned a residency at “Loonees,” a well-regarded club in Florence, Italy. In addition, he was offered multiple playing opportunities in London highlighted by opening for UK based “CoStar” at the 12 Bar Club as well as a co-headlining date with fellow songwriter Sylvie Lewis, at the Lush Bar also in London.

Alex has always had a penchant for connecting with people through the music. His willingness to open himself up is shown brightly in the honesty and intensity of his songs that discuss real issues and ask moral questions. Where some songwriters find it difficult to face the realities and utter failures in life, Alex has embraced them as driving forces behind his songs. It seems as though his approach has been right on with the fans and listeners from L.A. to Italy that Alex has swooned. From Los Angeles to New York to London to Rome and everywhere in between, Alex Nackman has grown well beyond the days of his earliest efforts and has turned into a true craftsman. On June 21, 2005, Alex released his 3rd studio release, “A Boy Who Thought He Knew,” with the aid of producer David Shaw (Van Morrison, Jerry Garcia, Etta James) and performance appearances from Fred Berman (of the Amos Lee band) and former Ray Charles bassist Steve Beskrone. The critically acclaimed record was backed by a 25 city U.S. and UK summer tour. He is currently working on his forth release.
